The coolant expansion tank stores excess coolant that expands as the engine temperature rises, maintaining proper pressure in the cooling system. It allows coolant to circulate between the radiator and reservoir without air entering the system. Over time, tanks can become brittle, discolored, or develop hairline cracks due to constant heat cycles. A failing tank may lead to coolant loss, overheating, or air pockets that reduce cooling efficiency. Modern expansion tanks also house level sensors, which must remain accurate to avoid false warnings. Replacing a compromised tank restores stable coolant pressure, proper circulation, and long-term engine protection.
